Developed by Rose and Nels Hedlund, Hedlund Gray Huskies are an unusually versatile line of sled dogs.  Physically, Hedlund huskies run between 50 and 70 lb, are long legged and long coupled ("rangy") with tight, compact feet.  Although most Hedund Gray Huskies are indeed primarily gray in color, the line does produce dogs of other colors, including dogs of a reddish hue, and even nearly all white.  Many Hedlund Gray Huskies have the white face 'mask' common to their Siberian husky ancestors.

Hedlund Gray Huskies are large and strong enough to work in freighting teams, yet light and rangy enough to keep up with highly competitive long-distance racing teams.  Hedlund Huskies are noted for developing an especially and intuitive bond with their owner/musher, though some Hedlunds may be very reserved around human strangers.  The Hedlund line produces an unusually high percentage of natural lead dogs.

Although largely replaced by smaller Alaskan Huskies on the race trails, Hedlund Huskies remain very popular among mushers who provide back-country adventure tours or who prefer the larger, stronger "Village" or "Trap-line" types of sled dogs for wilderness travel.
